Owning Exotic Pets in the U.S.
The Truth About Exotic Pet Ownership in the US
Travelling to America’s heartlands, Louis Theroux spends time with an Oklahoma man who has bred and collected over 150 tigers, visits the woman who privately owns one of America’s largest collections of chimpanzees, and finds himself in uncomfortably close contact with a number of big cats and dangerous primates. Be aware that, although these facilities refer to themselves as "sanctuaries", they are NOT sanctuaries, but rather private exotic animal collections. Sanctuaries do not breed, wishing to NOT contribute to the captive animal population. In the interest of safety, sanctuaries do NOT allow photo opportunities with wild animals. The justifications for captivity found in this documentary are startling. "Exotic animals prefer to be captive." Really? Released by the BBC 30 Oct 2011. 59 min. Presenter: Louis Theroux. TV documentary.
